ST. LOUIS AND HANNIBAL DEPOT IN BOWLING GREEN MO
WEST CHAMP CLARK DRIVE
BOWLING GREEN, MISSOURI -USA
Location: BOWLING GREEN, MO
Description:
  • RAILROAD DEPOT
Web Site ST. LOUIS AND HANNIBAL DEPOT IN BOWLING GREEN MO HOMEPAGE
Comments/Directions:
St. Louis and Hannibal Depot in Bowling Green MO has been converted to a home. Once you see it there is no doubt of its roots. All other signs of the railroad have disappeared over time. "St. Louis and Hannibal Railroad was originally incorporated as the St. Louis & Keokuk RR on February 16, 1857. The Civil war and various depressions and recessions prevented its actual construction until 1871. Beginning in its early construction, it was largely financed and (later) owned by John Insley Blair, Blairstown, New Jersey (1802–1899), and Moses Taylor, New York banker (1806–1882). Taylor died in 1882 and his protégé Percy Pyne remained on various boards. The railroad was eventually known as "The Short Line". On February 7, 1884, the St. Louis, Hannibal & Keokuk went into receivership and was sold to Blair on December 8, 1885, for $370,000. At that point it became the St. Louis & Hannibal Railway Co. The Perry Branch was surveyed and graded in the 1870s but was not built until 1891-92. The first train reached Perry July 1892. This was a dual expansion in that track was extended from Oakwood into Hannibal and a brick depot was built at 501 S. Main Street in 1892. This would be the final configuration; Mainline - Hannibal to Gilmore, Missouri, and Branchline - Ralls Jct. (New London, Missouri) to Perry. In 1893 the St. Louis, Hannibal and Kansas City (Perry Branchline original name) merged into the StL&HRy. John Blair died in 1899, at age 97, with an estimated estate of $70–90 million. His son, Dewitt Clinton Blair then assumed control. He died June 3, 1915. In 1917 the St. Louis & Hannibal went into receivership again and was sold to Robert LeRoy on behalf of Blair's grandson, C. Ledyard Blair for $30,000. It then was reorganized into the St. Louis & Hannibal Railroad. Around November 1919, the "Short Line" was sold to John Ringling (of Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus fame) for approximately $325,000. Between 1919 and 1930 he invested a further similar amount in rebuilding efforts. The depression was not kind to the St. Louis & Hannibal and Ringling. So, in 1932 the lower end of the mainline (below Bowling Green to Gilmore) was abandoned to save the rest of the system. John Ringling died December 2, 1936. His nephew John Ringling North assumed ownership of the railroad and circus interests. Only 5 miles of the southern mainline was saved and it became the St. Louis & Troy Railroad running from Troy to Moscow Mills, Missouri, and operated until October 1, 1960. It served local industries and was connected to the Burlington line by a siding at Moscow Mills. The St. Louis & Troy line was owned largely by local businessmen in cooperation with the Ringling family until 1944 when 25 businessmen solidified their ownership by purchasing it outright. Beginning in 1933, the StL&HRR began operating four Mack AD model railbuses to bolster passenger service. It also ran dedicated freight trains as well. It helped for a time but eventually the owners and management abandoned the Perry Branch in 1943. The mainline was abandoned as well in 1944. The company was finally dissolved March 12, 1945. The St. Louis & Troy remained in operation but was finally abandoned February 1, 1961. This was the last remainder of the line which began life in 1857 and construction began in 1871. The railroad was largely not very profitable during its entire life as it served a remote area with small revenues. The building of hard surface roads (US Hwy 61), the ever-expanding Foster Bus Line routes, growing trucking industry and finally the personal automobile spelled its demise. Locally, the Short Line is still fondly remembered for its personal service and the kindness shown by owners, management and crews.[citation needed] Former Hannibal & St. Louis station in Bowling Green, MO. Jefferson City MO Train Depot serves Amtrak. The station is the former Union Hotel, which was built in 1855. The hotel currently houses the Elizabeth Rozier Gallery with exhibits emphasizing Missouri art and culture. The Lohman's Landing building is next door, the Governor's Mansion is just up the street and the Missouri State Capital is with in walking distance. There is a lot to see in this area. If you area rail fan freight trains also pass through here and would be a good place to watch them pass.

Location: JOPLIN, MO
Phone: 417-623-7722
Description:
  • RAILROAD DEPOT
Comments/Directions:
This depot was originally located at 10th and Main Street in Joplin. They say it had to be moved because the railroad was "decommissioning" all unused property. The site is now the location of a railroad scrap material yard and is full of rails, wheels, etc. The depot was painstakingly disassembled stone by stone. Each was numbered and mapped and was placed in an empty lot for years waiting for a new purpose. Eventually, it was rebuilt as a restaurant on another site, which also happens to sit alongside of railroad tracks, but the business seems to ignore that relationship. The depot is now the Timberline Steakhouse. A large photo of the original depot is on display just inside the door. --Last I heard Timberline went out of business

Web Site NEW BLOOMFIELD RAILROAD DEPOT HOMEPAGE
Comments/Directions:
The New Bloomfield Railroad Depot in New Bloomfield MO was relocated to this location and converted into a home. At some time fairly recently must have been torn down and this replica built "In the 1884 History of Callaway County, New Bloom-field was listed as a station on the Missouri Division of the Chicago and Alton Railroad, twelve miles southwest of Fulton. It was laid out in 1836 by Enoch Murry...population 100." In 1983, New Bloomfield is now approximately ten miles southwest of Fulton with the new State Highway 54 cutting down on the distance, and ten miles north of Jefferson City. Population is now 519. In the 100 years between, New Bloomfield has merged with the town of Ellerslie, the railroad was abandoned and the track removed in the early 1930's. The depot was moved to the east end of town and is still in use as a duplex, owned by T. N. Dozier and wife. A city park, with shelter house, tennis court, basketball court, and picnic area, now occupy the railroad right-of-way. The New Bloomfield Rural Fire Association, Inc. was formed on November 23, 1976, witK. David W. West as president, and the fire house is also on the park property." http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMZRF6_New_Bloomfield_Railroad_Depot_New_Bloomfield_MO

NEW LONDON DEPOT
NEW LONDON, MISSOURI -
Location: NEW LONDON, MO
Description:
  • RAILROAD DEPOT
Web Site NEW LONDON DEPOT INFO
Comments/Directions:
The St. Louis & Hannibal Line Depot in New London is showing it's age. Locally, the Short Line is still fondly remembered for its personal service and the kindness shown by owners, management and crews" Wikipedia

Comments/Directions:
"ACF Industries traces its history to 1873, the year the St. Charles Car Manufacturing Company was founded. This was one of the thirteen railroad carbuilding companies that merged in 1899 to form the American Car and Foundry Company. The country's first railroad tank car, a "tub car" was built by one of these companies in 1889. Five years after the 1899 merger, the first all-steel passenger car ever ordered from a car builder left our former Berwick, PA shop. It was the first of a shipment of 300 similar cars built for New York City's pioneer subway, the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. By 1906, AC&F had steel shops at St. Louis, Detroit, Berwick, Huntington, and Madison, IL. American Car and Foundry Company's reputation rapidly spread abroad and in 1905 more than 100 motor and trailer subway cars were shipped to England for use in London's underground system. In 1917, a tank car leasing operation began which, in 1923, became Shippers Car Line, and later was acquired by AC&F in 1927. During World War I, AC&F produced artillery gun mounts and ammunition, field kitchens, pack saddles, submarine chasers, cloth shrinking machines and rollers, and even wooden tent pegs, as well as railway cars, for the Allies. AC&F's Wilmington plant also produced boats for the navy, and after the war switched production to yachts. In 1922, AC&F expanded into the automotive field by acquiring Carter Carburetor Corporation of St. Louis. This was our first step in product diversification - planned and executed long before the diversification concept became the by-word of American industry. In 1925, AC&F acquired Fageol Motors Co, a bus builder, and the Hall-Scott Motor Car Company, which produced bus engines. In 1926, AC&F acquired the J. G. Brill Co, a streetcar builder. During World War II, several AC&F plants produced army tanks, aircraft subassemblies, artillery shells, armor plate, and hospital cars, as well as ordinary railroad cars. By 1954, the corporation's interests had become so diversified that the name was changed from American Car and Foundry to ACF Industries Inc. ACF produced its last passenger car in 1959. ACF Industries LLC became a successor to ACF Industries Inc. in May, 2003." source ACF webs site.

AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN CAR #200
101 CLARK STREET
ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI -USA
Location: ST. CHARLES, MO
Description:
  • RAILCAR(S) ON DISPLAY
Comments/Directions:
This rail car was originally built by ACF at this location and was used by President George H Bush in 1985. As a side note the building behind the train was also used to make M3 tanks during WW II. "American Freedom Train Car #200 - Splendid Spirit The original American Freedom Train car! This 1926-vintage 6-axle heavyweight observation car belonged to Ross Rowland's High Iron Company (formerly Penn Central/New York Central business car #7) and usually went by the name "Brothers Two" (#200). In 1973, to promote the idea of an "American Freedom Train", this car was painted white with a blue roof and a wide red stripe across the window area -- and was the first car ever lettered "American Freedom Train" -- just under the roof line -- and "Splendid Spirit" just below the windows. It retained its number -- 200 -- and appeared on two High Iron Co. excursions in 1973. On a two-day Memorial Day weekend excursion from Hoboken to Binghamton behind Delaware & Hudson steam locomotive #302 (actually former Reading T-1 #2102 dressed as 302) it was simply lettered "Freedom Train". By its July 22, 1973 excursion behind NKP 759 from Hoboken to Scranton, it had matured into "American Freedom Train". Thanks go to Mr. Walter Curll and Mr. Keith Muldowney for helping piece this all together. Note the unique AFT tail herald -- an image of the Liberty Bell with the words 'American Freedom Train' and a small image of a train passing behind the bell. The large roof aerial antenna of the 70s has today been supplanted by a satellite dish (see below)! In 1975 the Splendid Spirit did, in fact, see service on the AFT in this paint scheme, but only for a few days in Ohio. It went on to serve as the observation car for the Chessie Steam Specials. By the time it served with C&O steam locomotive #614 (614T) on American Coal Enterprises steam locomotive tests in the mid 1980s it had been renamed "Independence". ACE was Ross Rowland's venture promoting the ACE3000, a "modern coal-burning steam locomotive designed to compete with diesels". On December 7, 1985 the Independence carried then Vice President George HW Bush to the Army-Navy Football Game as a guest of ACE. Image: Notepad "Aboard the Independence" and Napkins from the Independence, circa 1980. John Finnin collection. The Splendid Spirit is now back with its maker -- American Railcar Industries (successor to ACF) -- at ARI's St. Charles, MO plant still painted Tuscan red and bearing the name "Independence". Thanks go to Keith Muldowney and John Lewis for much of this information."

Visit the oldest and one of the best transportation museums on our new web site, with the biggest collection of steam locomotives in North America (33). Exhibits include multiple steam & diesel locomotives, lots of rolling stock, and much passenger equipment from many railroads. The museum was the "Home Base" for Frisco 1522 when she was running and she's on display now in her "second retirement". They also have a fair sized collection of traction equipment, some of which runs on a short loop on the grounds. They also have a large automotive display, one airplane, and a Mississippi river tug boat.

From the south end of the parking lot you can see some of the UP yards and the "Amshack". There ar still 2 or 3 tracks on the west side of the remaining train shed which house displays that change periodically. These tracks have played host to travelling stock such as Rail Cruise America rolling stock and at least one UP special train.
