Comments/Directions:
I lived in Ahmeek while in the Air Force and did not see the historical significance of this building,
"The Ahmeek Streetcar Station was the second-to-last stop on the Houghton County Traction Company line that started in Houghton and ended just north of Mohawk. The line was begun in 1901; the northernmost spur was completed in 1908. A car stopped in Ahmeek every half hour. The trip to Houghton took about about an hour and cost 15 cents.
After the streetcar company folded in 1932, the building was used as a gas station, antique shop, restaurant, and since the 1950‘s has included an ice cream parlor cherished by generations of Keweenaw residents and visitors. ..."

Comments/Directions:
This abandoned bridge was active when copper mining was the life blood of the area. After the C&H line quit using it was modified to fill gondola’s on the SOO Line. GPS N 47° 14.566 W 088° 27.572
"It was November of 1887 that a major fire swept through the Calumet Conglomerate workings at C&H. Due to C&H’s heavy use of timbering underground, the fire spread quickly and was soon large enough to force the closure of the entire mine. Shafts were sealed in the hoped to smother the fire, but it would be another six months before men could once again enter the mine. Luckily for C&H, its South Hecla shafts had not been connected with the rest of the mine and was unaffected by the fire. It was the only thing that saved the company from going under.
Desperate not to have the situation repeat itself, C&H embarked on an expensive defensive measure against future fires. The plan involved sinking a new vertical shaft down to the lower reaches of the conglomerate lode – a shaft not connected to the rest of the mine in any way. This way if a fire should once again break out, this new shaft could continue to mine the lode unaffected. This new shaft would become known as the Red Jacket Shaft, and was sunk just to the north-west of Calumet. To reach this new shaft a new branch line of the C&H railroad had to be built – a line that would have to cross the Mineral Range tracks in the process.
As a result C&H had to erect a short trestle to cross the afore mentioned tracks, along with a pair of long earth embankments to raise the tracks to the required height. Once crossing the trestle the tracks would turn northward, and head to the Red Jacket Shaft.
Amazingly that old trestle has managed to remain to this day, sitting alone in a dusty field like a forgotten monument. The old Mineral Range right of way is now a recreational trail, and only ATV’s and snowmobiles pass under the old bridge anymore. What’s more its eastern approach embankment has been destroyed and hauled away, leaving an abrupt dead end in its wake."

Snow Plow on display Calumet MI. on Red Jacket Road. It is Russel Snow Plow 133 it was pushed by a locomotive.
"The Russell Snow Plow was simply a large plow attached to the front of a rail car. While a rotary blower would lumber along the tracks at a slow and deliberate pace, the Russell would simply be pushed by a separate engine right through the snow throwing it out of the way. The car consisted of three parts; the forward plow, the elevated control booth, and a rear car. Besides the main forward plow, the Russell was also equipped with a pair of wing plows that could be extended out over the sides of the tracks to clear more room along the right of way."

Restored 1870'S Pere Marquette Railroad Depot and Rails to Trails Recreation Trailway. The City of Evart Local Development Finance Authority and Downtown Development Authority have restored the Evart Depot (formerly Pere Marquette Railroad) to its 1870's character for use along the Rails to Trails paved trailway. The restoration includes a large meeting room available for use by non profit groups and trailway users. The building also contains restroom facilities for trailway users and the relocated municipal offices of the City of Evart. The restoration was completed at a cost of $300,000 with funding from the LDFA, DDA and ISTEA funds administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation. When combined with the recreation trailway improvements also funded by the LDFA, DDA, The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, U.S. Department of Interior the total project cost was approximately $800,000. To schedule use of the meeting room facilities by non-profit groups, please contact the Evart Municipal Offices at 616-734-2181. A dedication event is being planned tentatively for the weekend of September 21, 1996 that will include events and activities that were part of the original 1870's dedication event.

"The Marquette Medical Arts offices at 107 W. Main St, in downtown Marquette, is, in addition to Marquette's "newest" state-of-the-art Medical facililty, is also one of Marquette's most prestigiously historic buildings. Originally the home of Marquette's "South Shore Depot" train station, it opened for business on January 11, 1902 and remained in service until 1945. The building was initially hailed by The Mining Journal as "strictly modern and metropolitan," with steam heat, electric lights, Port Washington sandstone exterior, a slate roof, and eight-foot awnings on all sides. The second floor featured Georgia pine paneling and hardwood floors and served as rooms for railroad employees and other passengers requiring overnight accommodations.
Many famous people passed through the station, most notably among them President Teddy Roosevelt, who conducted a speech before an audience of 6,000 from a station platform during the 1912 Presidential Campaign.

"The original Negaunee depot burned in 1879.[2] This Negaunee depot was built in 1884 by the Marquette and Western Railroad as a freight and passenger depot.[3] After only a year of service, the entire line was bought by a competitor, the Marquette, Houghton and Ontonagon Railroad.[3] The structure was used as the main freight and passenger depot in Negaunee until it was replaced with a newer structure in 1922.[2] In 1912 it was moved a short distance across the railroad tracks[4] to the location it now stands.[3] The structure was used by the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway as offices, warehouse space, and a freight depot until 1965.[3] The station has recently been converted into an artist's studio.[2]
