Although The Dalton Depot has undergone many changes over the years, it is still one of the greatest historical landmarks in Berkshire County. From a bustling train depot in the 1800's, a machine shop in the 1950's, a tavern in 1976 and a popular bar and restaurant today, The Depot has history inside and out. Whether you're a railroad buff or a Berkshire Historian, The Depot is a great place to visit, relax and wait for the next train to roar by. We have put together a little bit of The Depot's history in this section, which we hope you enjoy. So, whether you're a first time visitor to The Berkshires, a returning visitor, or a local resident, a stop at The Depot is a must.

GRANITE RAILWAY HISTORIC SITES
QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS -USA
Location: Quincy, MA
Description:
  • HISTORICAL LANDMARK
Comments/Directions:
The city of Quincy, MA (just south of Boston) was the site of the first commercially successful railroad in the US. The Granite Railway, built in 1826, carried stone from a Quincy quarry to the Neponset River, where it was loaded onto vessels for transport to Charlestown, MA for construction of the Bunker Hill Monument. The railway survived to become a branch of the New Haven RR, until 1959. The right-of-way is now used by Interstate Highway 93. Three sites exist where traces of the railway can be seen. 1. Foot of Bunker Hill Lane, off Willard Street. The terminus of the railroad, and the site of a small tramway, where granite blocks were loaded onto horse-drawn flatcars. This site is not marked, proceed to the dead end of Bunker Hill Lane and follow the trail to the site of an embankment, which is the right-of-way. 2. Inclined Plane. An inclined plane used by railcars and later trucks. From Willard Street, follow Bates Ave, O'Connell Ave, and Mullin Avenue to the dead end. 3. East Milton Square. At the intersection of Adams St, Granite Ave, and Willard St, in a town square atop the Southeast Expressway, a switch frog from the railway (also shown at Chicago's Columbian Exposition in the 1890s) is on display. Also, the pier where the stone was loaded onto the vessels is visible, but not accessible. To view it, proceed south on Granite Avenue from the Neponset River bridge and enter I-93 southbound at exit 11. The ramp will be visible from the driver's side just as your auto is facing north on the circular on-ramp.
