Description:
|
Comments/Directions:
On display in front of the Morton County Historical Museum in Elkhart, Kansas, along U.S. Hwy 56 is the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad Caboose #999481. One of 225 built, this Cupola style was manufactured in 1942 and rebuilt in 1970. Caboose’s provided the train crew with shelter, a conductor’s seat, a desk, a coal fired heat stove, a 12 volt DC refrigeratpr, a microphor chemical toilet, three pairs of facing bench seats that could be converted into bunks and two cupola seats. These cars presented some operational issues because they had to be turned to face the proper direction. Tradition on many lines held that cabooses be painted a bright red, like this one.

GALENA ERIE ENGINE (PRIVATE)

Comments/Directions:
An Alco Erie engine is "on display" in Galena. It is not really on display since it is private but is completely visible. I spoke with a lady from the Galena Historical Museum and she said the engine had been there as long as she could remember but was owned by whoever owned the lot on which it sits.

The Belpre depot has been relocated to the museum grounds and nicely restored inside and out. There are various other railroad artifacts as well. I received an email that a 12" steam engine that used to run at Elitch's in Denver is on display. I don't believe it to be running though. When I stopped by in 2003 there were no signs of track.

Comments/Directions:
The Stevens County Gas & Historical Museum was dedicated on May 16, 1961. It was established as a memento of the Hugoton Gas Field and the progressive development of Stevens County. Currently, the gas well, drilled in 1945, is still producing. The 1945 well equipment is on display at the site of the well. The main museum building houses displays of early 1900 furnishings including a chapel, dining room, parlor, kitchen, and a sewing room. Also, in the main buildings displays of Indian artifacts, farming tools, a printing and western shop, and art room bring back life in the days of long ago. Completely restored buildings on the half-block museum complex include the Santa Fe Hugoton Train Depot, an 1887 school house, an 1887 home (one of the oldest homes in Hugoton), and an early day grocery store and barber shop. There's a Professional Building (a tribute to Hugoton's past judges and lawyers), the first jail house in Hugoton, and a 1905 church (the second church built in Hugoton). The Agricultural Building, completed in 1995, offers extensive displays of farm equipment & implements.

Comments/Directions:
Text below includes former description of museum which is no longer open, depot is privately owned now.
The former Santa Fe depot was purchased in 1999 from Central Kansas Railway, a shortline railroad. In June 2001, the railroad was purchased by Watco Companies and now runs as Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad. The Santa Fe Depot Foundation owns and operates the depot as the Cannonball Welcome Center and a railroad museum. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The depot is of the county seat design and features an open air waiting room, ladies waiting room, men's waiting room, freight room and baggage room. There is a small basement where the boiler for the steam heating system (no longer in use) and the coal bin is located. The building has been restored back to its original ambiance of a passenger depot with the Santa Fe colors. A park area west of the building has been deeded to the City of Kingman. The building is again a "working" depot as the train and track crews for this division now use the baggage room as their office. Reunions, small dinner meetings, and other activities can be held within the depot. Other special activities that have taken place in and around the depot include a train excursion and motorcar excursion. The welcome center and museum is open weekdays Monday through Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. -- open by chance some afternoons and weekends or by appointment.

Comments/Directions:
Currently owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad, this bridge was built in 1939 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad to improve this section of track in western Kansas. The bridge spans the Cimarron River which was prone to flash floods and the original trestles were frequently washed out. The line also had to descend in and out the river valley necessitating hairpin curves as well. To improve this section of track the Rock Island RR hauled in approximately 3 million cubic yards of material and built this bridge considered a modern marvel of its day. The Samson of the Cimarron bridge and line relocation removed 113 feet of elevation, 353 degrees of curvature, and over 3.5 miles of track. There is a picnic area near the east end of the bridge just off the highway.

LYONS ATSF DEPOT
LYONS, KANSAS -USA
Location: LYONS, KS
Description:
|
Comments/Directions:
The ATSF depot in Lyons is a beautiful that once saw much traffic but now has fallen into disrepair. There was a fire that caused some damage as well as vandals, weather, and age. I really would love to see this building restored. It stands next to occasionally used rails owned by Kansas & Oklahoma Railway. This historic building is privately owned by Raymond Mazur of Lyons, he is currently not listing this building for sale, but is taking reasonable offers, He bought this property off Jones Oil Company shortly after the fire occured in the rear of the building, he has since reroofed it and restructured it.

The depot in Oakley more resembles a diner than a traditional depot of the Kansas plains due to its more recent construction. It is currently used by UP crews.

SANTA FE CARS & DEPOT (PRIVATE)

OTTAWA, KANSAS -
Location: ABOUT 6 MILES EAST OF HWY 75 ON HWY 56
Description:
- RAILROAD DEPOT

Comments/Directions:
An assortment of beautifully restored Santa Fe cars sits next to the highway on a private lot. There are several coaches as well as a mint condition looking boxcar. A depot has been relocated to the grounds and restored as well. It looked like the Ottawa depot but I could not tell from the road and did not approach out of respect for the no trespassing signs.

Comments/Directions:
Heart of the Heartlands was formed in 1991 to preserve southeast Kansas, northeast Oklahoma, and SW Missouri area railroad history. Our first project was the Santa Fe depot in Cherryvale, KS. We also restored the smaller Carona Depot in 1996-97. We also have a restored depot from Boston, Missouri. We now have the MKT 103 caboose and one of two SEKRR cabooses in existence on display. We have also moved and restored a motorcar shed which came from the same line (MPRR) as the Carona Depot. Our group also organizes motor car rides and public excursions on the Southeast Kansas and South Kansas and Oklahoma railroads. We have completed the cosmetic restoration of the KCS 1023 one of a very few KCS steam locomotives in existence. In Pittsburg, KS Schlanger Park we have also restored a Joplin & Pittsburg electric RR section motor car which is displayed in the Carona motor car shed. It is the last motor car of J&P lineage in existence. It was built in 1936. In June of 2004 we opened a Railroad Historical and Educational Center. This center contains displays of historical items from railroads that once served this area. We are always looking for new members who are interested in any aspect of railroading. We meet the second Wed of each month at the Carona depot. For more information contact Larry Spahn; 1-620-396-8594 or Nancy Offenbacker; 1-417-624-4799

Beginning as a family farm on the Oregon Trail in 1854 and located between the Potwin Neighborhood and Downtown Topeka. Old Prairie Town at Ward Meade Historic Site is a beautiful six-acre complex with a Victorian home, log cabin, turn-of-the-century town, plus a 2.5 acre botanical garden dedicated to preserving and sharing the early history of Topeka. Unlike conventional parks that require visitors to provide their own amusement, Old Prairie Town staff and volunteers, guide visitors through the facilities. Receptions, reunions, and tour groups from across the country are commonplace with volunteers serving pre-arranged meals in the elegant mansion, pioneer log cabin, livery stable, Preston Hale Reception Room. ATSF Depot and ATSF 999429 caboose are on display.

WICHITA ROCK ISLAND DEPOT
711 E. DOUGLAS
WICHITA, KANSAS -USA
Location: Wichita, KS
Description:
|
Comments/Directions:
The Rock Island Depot was built in 1887, by the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway Company. The rectangular two-story depot served as a freight and passenger station for the bustling community that advertised itself as the "Athletic Ajax of the Aboundful Arkansas." With its many Richardsonian Romanesque features the depot is typical of Victorian style railroad stations built during the late 1800's. The window and entry arches on the first floor are of rough hewn sandstone. A low roof accented with metalwork gables is supported by carved brackets beneath which can be seen a pressed brickwork pattern carried out around the entire building. Passenger service ended at the depot in 1914 with the opening of Union Station located just to the west.
