Comments/Directions:
The Verde Canyon is acclaimed as Arizona's longest-running nature show. The remote wilderness of the Verde Canyon, located west of Sedona and below Jerome, is renowned for its towering, red rock pinnacles; clean, green waters; Indian ruins, tunnels, trestles and clear, azure skies. This picturesque setting is further enhanced by the variety of indigenous flora and fauna and the many migrating waterfowl, including America's bald eagle, that winter in this riparian respite each year. Though it is possible to hike the canyon, the most comfortable and entertaining way to experience it is by riding the rails of the Verde Canyon Railroad.

Description:

|
Comments/Directions:
11 stalls remain of the original 20 used by the El Paso & Southwestern railroad. The El Paso Southwestern Railroad reached Tucson in 1912 from Benson, AZ and copper mines near Bisbee, AZ. Their roundhouse was constructed that year and their depot was completed the following year. The roundhouse would have been used until the 1924 merger with SP rr. It is privately owned; the sign on the building says "Open to the Public." The city recently developed a Master Plan that includes possible acquisition for a park facility. It is a non-descript crescent-shaped building - beige-colored, stucco-over-brick, and it sits on a chain-link fenced-in property. It is a couple miles south of the EPSW depot on W. Congress Ave. (Read all about the EPSW in Arizona Attraction No. 58 - Tucson EPSW Depot) Nice views can be seen at the listed address on Google Maps - Street View. Photos of the roundhouse and depot show what is to be seen (not much) are on link: [http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1851363 ]

There also is an interactive display explaining the railroads' key role in the area's history. The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad depot is a beautiful example of the Greek temple-like Classic Revival architecture. Built in 1913 by Phelps Dodge Corp, it connected Tucson (through Benson and Douglas) with El Paso until the 1924 merger with SP rr, who then used it for storage until sold in 1976. Two different restaurants (now defunct since 2006) have occupied the center portico, which remains unused currently, and private offices occupy the two porticos on each end. National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
The EPSW began as the El Paso and Southeastern - a 36 mile short-line built in 1888-89 to transport copper to El Paso, TX smelter from Bisbee, AZ (Copper Queen Mine - see the huge, mile-wide open pit at Bisbee on Goggle maps). The route went westerly from Bisbee, AZ and then northerly through Fairbank, AZ, to connect with SP at Benson. In 1901, EPSE became the EPSW, which built lines connecting to El Paso by 1902 and to Tucson by 1912. For the few short years of operation the EPSW paralleled the SP and became unprofitable. Portions became the "Old Southline" of the SP; but it was abandoned by 1942.

Comments/Directions:
The Southern Pacific Railroad, arrived in Tucson in 1880 and replaced their first wooden depot with an interesting complex of buildings in 1907, including the depot plus the railway express, records vault and stationmaster buildings. The depot boasts an interesting archetectural history; originally sporting Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, SP modified and enlarged the building in 1941 with an Art Moderne update. Now it is a huge building, 400 foot long, with two massive towers in front (plus one trackside) with massive square corner columns and lesser columns along the front porch. It now appears as a modern, stream-lined and somewhat "plain" big building with a white, smooth stucco finish all-around. Other than the red tile roof, little of the Spanish character shows. The 3 accompanying buildings maintained their original Spanish Colonial character in the 1940's makeover, that would have included the smooth stucco walls (in a tan/beige color) along with arched window and door openings, and low-pitched red clay, tile roof with wide broad-eaved gable roof lines.
The city purchased the complex from UP in 1998 and restored it by 2004. It is on the National Register of Historic Places as a part of the Tucson Warehouse Historic District, which received its designation in 1999. The depot serves the Tucson Amtrack depot and has small private business enterprises. The Southern Arizona Historical Museum is housed in the Records Vault building (see Arizona attraction No. 56 ). SP Locomotive No. 1673 - a 2-6-0 M-4b Mogul steam locomotive, built in 1900, is on display. It was designated on the National Historic Register in 1992.

The historic La Posada Hotel has been restored since first built along the Santa Fe in Winslow. It is a beautiful building that brings the southwest flavor to life. It is right on Historic Route 66 and the BNSF mainline. Over 90 trains pass daily right next to the hotel to keep the railfan's attention. In addition, there is also the the famous Turquoise Room restaurant, a world class dining experience that is worth the trip by itself. Rates are quite reasonable.
