Comments/Directions:
Since 1923, the Alaska Railroad has been connecting communities and ports from Southcentral to Interior Alaska, as regularly scheduled public transportation with over 500 miles of track. Over the years we have grown to accommodate the high interest of Alaska visitors that want to see the beautiful terrain that Alaska has to offer. Whether guests are taking the train to a cruise port, riding to Denali National Park or creating their own customized multi – day trip in Alaska with the Railroad as their main mode of transportation, we can help make it special and memorable. In the summer months (Mid – May to Mid – September) we have four different passenger train routes, and in the winter season (Mid – September to Mid – May) we have two passenger train routes. There are many activities along the railbelt to enjoy, ranging from day cruises, white water rafting, ice climbing, sightseeing, to dog mushing – there is something for everyone. Check out our winter 2015-2016 schedule and summer 2016 schedule on the Denver Rails calendar and visit our website, AlaskaRailroad.com for more information. For the railfans...ARR #1, ex-ICC #802 is on display at depot. ARR #556, a 2-8-0 is on display in a city park.

ALASKA HOME TUNNEL
VALDEZ, ALASKA -USA
Location: About 8 miles north of Valdez
Description:
  • RAILROAD TUNNEL
Comments/Directions:
Though not significant in it size, it is the only remnant of a railroad that never was. Planned and begun in 1908, the Alaska Home Railroad was to reach copper mines in McCarthy. A battle ensued between this line and a Railroad from Cordova that resulted in the death of an Alaska Home employee. The backers of the line pulled out financing and the line was never built. This is all that remains.
