RAILROAD RELATED MUSEUM
Comments/Directions:
Museum deals with canals nationally but also discusses the birth of the railroad and has on display a Pangborn model of the Hercules that is on long-term loan from the B&O museum. The model is a life-size replica, about 20 feet long. The museum is also currently acquiring a large model railroad collection, some of which will be displayed on a layout during the holidays. Other parts of the collection may be on permanent display in cases in other parts of the museum (like the library/archives). The museum also has some research collections of note. A fairly large general railroad book collection, an assortment of gravity railroad and early anthracite railroad booklets/pamphlets/stockholder reports/congressional reports, a postcard collection (mostly 20th century), some property records of the Lehigh and New England, layout maps of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and other stuff. Some of this, particularly the layout drawings, are still being processed but a lot of the other material is currently available. Some of the railroad books are also still being catalogued and appointments are required for library/archive visits.
