The rail ride is associated with the adjoining mine tour. A gift shop with mine and rail information is next to the mine, while an Anthracite coal mining museum is located a few blocks away. The rail ride is about a quarter mile up, and a quarter mile back. It features an old strip mine, an old country bank mine, and a scenic overlook of Ashland and the valley below. This line and the engines were originally used to haul coal from the mine to the tipple at the end of the line.

14 Cabooses and a 1931 Davenport Steam engine Display next to The Catawissa Train Station. We kept everything almost original in the cabooses, so it not like a motel room. Built a very large His & Hers private Bathrooms next to the cabooses, You'll get your own keys to them. We are putting bathrooms in two newer cabooses, I should have them done this spring. They are the newer types, a little longer. But my older caboose will not have them. We finished six cabooses out of ten so far. The location is like a little park, lots of shade trees and these cabooses are completely redone over with new knotty pine wood work, some have two twin with one bunk bed, AC, heaters, refrigerators, microwaves, TV/VCR with railroad videos, and outside gas grills. Private parking next to each caboose. This is our 3rd year for renting cabooses & each year doubles for reservations, we see the same people return or new guests they told about us. Also, we are remodeling our 1910 train station and making it into a bed & breakfast, but I do not think we'll have it finished this year? • Comments/Directions:
Museum deals with canals nationally but also discusses the birth of the railroad and has on display a Pangborn model of the Hercules that is on long-term loan from the B&O museum. The model is a life-size replica, about 20 feet long. The museum is also currently acquiring a large model railroad collection, some of which will be displayed on a layout during the holidays. Other parts of the collection may be on permanent display in cases in other parts of the museum (like the library/archives). The museum also has some research collections of note. A fairly large general railroad book collection, an assortment of gravity railroad and early anthracite railroad booklets/pamphlets/stockholder reports/congressional reports, a postcard collection (mostly 20th century), some property records of the Lehigh and New England, layout maps of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and other stuff. Some of this, particularly the layout drawings, are still being processed but a lot of the other material is currently available. Some of the railroad books are also still being catalogued and appointments are required for library/archive visits.

A railroad related B&B, visitors to the Altoona Area will find the Inn extremely convenient to the Horseshoe Curve and the Railroaders Memorial Museum. The Inn is adjacent to the Norfolk Southern mainline, and is less than two miles from the Gallitzin exit of US 22, at 702 Jackson Street in Gallitzin. When standing on the bridge facing the tunnels, the Inn is on your right. The Inn features five non-smoking, air-conditionaed rooms, each with a private bath, cable TV and refrigerator. Our covered deck provides our guests with a weather proof vantage point from which to watch the more than 60 trains a day that go past the Inn. Night time lighting allows for 24/7 train watching if you like. Our wireless network provides internet access, and our "chiminea" wood stove keep our guests warm, while watching the trains at night. An added benefit is Phil Faudi, a railroad historian and tour guide, who continues to get rave reviews from our guests, who have taken his guided tours of the west slope and Altoona area. Phils' lifelong love of the PRR and knowledge of current railroad operations comes across in his half day or full day tours. "When you stay at the Tunnel Inn, only the engineer is closer to the train."

Open Sunday afternoons in June, July, and August and selected days in September and October, the Heritage Village showcases the central role of the railroad in this rural community during the early years of the 20th century. The village of Muddy Creek Forks is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and coming into town is like stepping back a century in time. Costumed interpreters welcome visitors to the A. M. Grove Store (which also housed the railroad station and Post Office), Muddy Creek Forks Roller Mills, and grain elevator. The second floor of the store contains displays about the village and railroad. Motorcar trains carry visitors on a forty-minute trip through the Muddy Creek Valley on the original mainline of the famous Ma & Pa. Ma & Pa Locomotive No. 82 and Caboose 2007 are on display and are opened to visitors on special days. Souvenirs and snack foods are available, and visitors are welcome to picnic on the grounds. More information, directions, and a calendar of events can be found on the Society website.
