The county has made available about 8.5 acres of land on which to build operating railroad layouts. We have constructed an elevated railroad layout for 3/4" and 1" scale trains with about 1000' track (the Highline) and a layout of about 4600' track for 1 1/2" scale (the Groundline). In return for the use of the park land, the club offers visitors rides on our Run Days scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May until the end of October.

  • Comments/Directions:
The Poughkeepsie Highland Railroad Bridge, which has remained dormant since the mid-1970s when fire rendered it unable to carry trains across the Hudson River, will be developed into a state park. The bridge will be developed into a walkway and bikeway park with breathtaking views of the Hudson. When built in 1888, in typical New York style, was the longest bridge in the world, an engineering marvel. For the last three decades; however, the bridge has sat empty and unused. As a pedestrian bridge over the Hudson, it will allow New Yorkers to connect to the history and natural beauty of the state and draw them to Poughkeepsie, Kingston and surrounding communities.

Museum in old Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Station. Station fully restored. Freight station next door along with a few old rail cars. Across the tracks and up a few hundred yards is the old Erie station. A larger, more majestic station, it is in fairly good shape but abandoned. Portion of old Erie yard is within sight from the stations, as well as a few remains of the yard works. On the other side of town (1/2 mile) is the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh East Salamanca Yard and station. This includes most of the old cars shops, however the roundhouse has been removed. Most of the tracks have also been removed, however the station is in good shape and is used by B&P work crews. The museum itself features a variety of RR equipment. I also found two scale models of the old coaling towers impressive. A large number of pictures from the area may also be found.

    Comments/Directions:
Rail City Museum was the first steam-operating railroad museum in the United States. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, Rail City offered visitors a unique opportunity to view an extensive collection of railroad structures and equipment that included 16 steam locomotives and over 50 pieces of rolling stock. The highlight of the museum was a 1.5. mile steam train ride. The history of Rail City is fascinating account of an eccentric visionary, Dr. Stanley A. Groman from Syracuse, NY, single-handedly saved a score of railroad locomotives, cars, track and structures from the scrap heap. The December, 1995 issue of trains magazine states: "Stanley A Groman's museum in upstate New York was a pioneering example of railroad preservation...back in the 1950's as the steam era was facing fast, it took people like Stanley Groman to begin the work of saving locomotives, cars and structures for generations to come." During the construction of Rail City, old #38, a 2-8-0 Baldwin locomotive, made the final steam passenger run on the New York Central System in New York State. Dr. Groman collected the only remaining street cars from Scranton, PA, Rochester, NY, and the Lake Erie and Northern Railway. Some rolling stock came from as far away as Gallup, NM. Despite all of the energy that Dr. Groman directed into the construction of Rail City, it closed in 1974. The steam railroad museum was just simply ahead of its time. In 1991, 17 years after Rail City closed, Dr. Groman's son, Bob, discovered his father's negatives and spent six years developing and researching over 2,000 photographs taken during the acquisition of equipment and construction of Rail City. The story of Rail City is actually the story of a number of well known railroads that Dr. Groman acquired equipment from. In addition, Dr. Groman amassed a respectable collection of steam-era photographs, time tables, art prints, and other rarilroad memorabilia. The Deer River Station (from Deer River, NY), dismantled and reconstructed on the site of Rail City by Dr. Groman in 1954, has been restored and now contains a wealth of railroad photographs, time tables, memorabilia as well as a railroad gift shop. The Rail City Historical Musuem opened on memorial Day in 1997 is a grand trip down memory lane and an exciting look back on the history of the American Railroads
