    Comments/Directions:
Features models and toy trains from "Z" to "G", housed in an 1898 El Paso and Northeastern Railroad Depot, then Chicago Burlington Quincy RR Depot, then Southern Pacific RR Depot. A standard gauge railroad "scooter" is now on the museum grounds as well as our full size, standard gauge caboose. It's a great place to phtograph the kids (young and old). We also features an M.T.C. (Miniature Train Company) 16 inch gauge railroad with 10 scale mile train rides. We can also provide guided tours of the Cloudclimbing Route of the Southern Pacific Railroad roadbed and still standing trestles of the steepest standard gauge railway in the world, the Alamogordo/Sacramento Mtn Railway (1898-1948) Our Depot is a great place for Train Spotting. Union Pacific runs a dozen or more trains a day thru Alamogordo, including business trains and Historic Steam. Twice we have been visited by UP FEF 844. The Depot is 50 feet from UNION PACIFIC mainline welded ribbon rail.

Located in the restored ATSF Depot in Clovis NM, and on the National Historic Register. Depot has been restored to its condition in the '50s when the ATSF was in the final phase of changing from steam to diesel power. The Clovis Subdivision was the last on the ATSF to operate steam. The museum has three themes, 1 - the story of model trains, 2 - the history of the railroad in Australia and Great Britain, and 3 - the history of the Belen Cutoff of the ATSF with a museum of historical items.

    Location: SANTA FE, NM
    Description:
  • RAILS TO TRAILS
  • Web Site SANTA FE RAIL TRAIL HOMEPAGE
    Comments/Directions:
This trail is about 6 miles one-way, unless you get lost. At Siringo Rd you CROSS the tracks, otherwise you take a much longer, but very scenic route down the Arroyo De Los Chamisos. Both are paved, but the arroyo has much steeper grades. The trail starts at the Rail Yard Park near center city and follows the railroad to I-25, with plans to extend it. Yield at road crossings, particularly the major intersection where you cross US-84/285 (major north-south auto route through town).

Destination choices include a layover in the sleepy hamlet of Lamy or the scenic Galisteo overlook. The Friday evening High-Desert Highball and Saturday night Campfire Barbecue Trains are available April through October. Food is usually available for purchase in Lamy and picnics are permitted. Consist is often mixed with freight cars carrying lumber, beer or pipe. There is also a real nice gift shop in the depot.
