  • Comments/Directions:
This locomotive was purchased by the Ironhorse Central RR Museum in Chisago City, MN and moved there Nov. 1st 2006. The process of returning it to the NP L-4 927 configuration has commenced. Many people have confused the fireless locomotive # 8 with this locomotive. The true history is that it was built in April of 1896 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works with the construction number of 14796. It was built for the St. Paul and Duluth RR as # 71. It became NP L-4 class #927 after the StP&D was purchased by the NP on June 15th of 1900. In August of 1929 it was rebuilt into shop locomotive # 10. It worked at the Brainerd shops as a shop switch emgine until 1955 when it was replaced by shop locomotive #7. (#7 used to be NP L-9 #1065.) Shop locomotive # 10 was donated to the city of Brainerd in 1956 and sat at the Brainerd shops until 1961 when it was moved to Lum Park.

The Ironhorse Central Railroad Museum is located in Chisago City, MN and has been in this present location since 1966. Richard and Robert Thompson and Doug Alexander started back in the 1950's collecting memorabilia, taking photo's and going on MRA fan trips. They purchased engine # 4 in 1963 and had it stored until 1966 when it was moved to the present location. Track construction was started that year and in 1984 the circle was completed and a final spike ceremony was held celebrating the event. A documentary called "Ironhorse" was filmed from 1983 to 1984 and has been featured on television multiple times. In those years we had many newspaper articles and were shown on local news programs. We have almost a mile of track in a circle so we can run our equipment around. We have over 20 pieces of equipment. We are still out in the country so we have plenty of scenic areas for nice photo's. We have a 1895 Saint Paul And Duluth Railroad depot that is the center of focus in our museum. The depot is where most of the collection of railroad artifacts are located. Displays are changed out frequently. Steam ups are posted on the website. We are open June 1st to September 30th Fridays and Saturdays from 10 to 5 and offer Bumblebee rides on Friday and Diesel excursions on Saturdays.(see Website)

Depart the park side of Ironworld by boarding an authetic 1920's trolley and embark on a journey through time. The picturesque 2.4 mile railway routes you around the beautiful Pillsbury mine pit and deposits you at Glen location, a re-creation of an early iron mining community. Upon disembarking at historic Wilpen Depot, you can begin to experience what life was like for early miners and their families.

You haven't seen Duluth until you've explored the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center's Historic Union Depot, better know as simply the Depot. This former Union Railroad Depot was built in 1892 by the Boston firm of Peabody, Stearns and Furber. By 1910, the Union Depot was serving seven different rail lines with up to 5,000 people passing through its doors daily. In 1971, this beautiful landmark, in the French Norman architectural style, was listed on the national register of historic places. After it served its last train and underwent major renovations, the Union Depot reopened in 1973 as an area cultural center. Now called the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center's Historic Union Depot (our nickname is still "the Depot"), the historic part of the building houses exhibits by four different museums and its theater wing functions as a studio and administrative home to five performing arts organizations.

Ride the rails following the St. Louis River, so close you can almost touch the water. Our vintage railroad passenger cars (1912 & 1914 Pullman-style passenger cars) plus an open "safari" make this this trip even more enjoyable. Our engine is a 1946 diesel switcher that is in excellent shape. This trip is great for train fans and tourists alike. Charters are also available. Our season runs from Mid-June to Mid-October.

The Depot is open from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. There is no admission fee but donations are welcome. The Milwaukee Road Depot boasts two award-winning Minneapolis hotels by Marriott, a 15,000 square foot indoor water park, a full service bar and restaurant, a variety of unique banquet and meeting spaces, heated underground parking, and an enclosed, seasonal ice skating rink. For nearly seven decades, family members and loved ones stood at the atrium of the Depot and waved to passengers boarding the trains of the Milwaukee Road line. The Depot was a hub of activity during the late 1800s, and at the peak of activity in 1920, the prosperous Depot bustled with 29 trains departing daily. While the last train left in 1971, the Depot still stands as a monument to the classic travel experience. Today the fully-renovated Milwaukee Road Depot has re-opened its doors enhancing the revitalization movement of Minneapolis? Riverfront District

Located in historic Bandana Square, the Twin City Model Railroad Museum is an exquisitely detailed model panorama of railroads in the Twin Cities during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. This was a time when both steam and diesel engines shared the rails. Thousands of volunteer hours have faithfully reproduced Twin Cities railroad history in O Scale (1/4 inch equals 1 foot), an impressive sight and well worth your visit. Come watch the Empire Builder speed along miles of tracks through the Twin Cities, rumble over St. Anthony Falls on the famed Stone Arch Bridge and down the Mississippi. Freight trains haul the goods to and from the industries that made the Twin Cities famous. The Twin City Model Railroad Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide family entertainment for the young and old alike, while preserving this era of Minnesota railroad history. Sunday: Noon-5pm Monday: Closed Tuesday: 11am-3pm Wednesday: 11am-3pm Thursday: 11am-3pm Friday: 11am-5pm Saturday: 10am-5pm

Great Northern Engine 2523 and Great Northern depot. This mountain-type locomotive is a survivor of the steam engines acquired by the Great Northern Railway to speed up mainline passenger service. It was placed on permanent exhibit October 17, 1967. The Great Northern passenger train, No. 2523, was built in 1916 to speed up the passenger main line service through the mountains. This train was painted green because all passenger trains were, although this train was occasionally used to carry freight. The train was usually driven at 79 mph because 80 was the maximum speed without cab control. Three men operated inside the train, a brakeman, a fireman, and an engineer. There were also two men on the caboose. A powerful and speedy locomotive of the P-2 class, the engine now looks every bit the aristocrat that it was during the years it was preeminently associated with Great Northern?s crack transcontinental trains ? The Empire Builder and the Oriental Limited. The Empire Builder was inaugurated in June of 1929 and the popularity of the train led to addition of cars to the consist and this necessitated more powerful engines ? renowned S-2 locomotive. Engine 2523 is the last of 28 locomotives built for the Great Northern by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. After these engines were replaced by the more powerful S-2?s in Empire Builder service they pulled the fast mail trains and the famed silk trains. The P-2 engines later were use din freight service and were retired in 1955. Locomotive and tender are 94 feet 6 ΒΌ inches in length, weigh 617,000 pounds and stand 15 feet 10 inches from rail to the top of the stack. In 1946, No. 2523 was converted to an oil burner and developed 57,580 pounds of traction effort. Each of the eight drive wheels is 73 inches high. The track on which 2523 stands is laid to Great Northern main-line specifications. The creosoted ties are supported on a sub-ballast consisting of 6 inches of rock chips and a ballast of 6 inches of crushed granite, quarried by Great Northern near Granite Falls, Minnesota. Engine 2523?s last run was in 1958, and was placed on permanent display at the Kandiyohi County Historical Society on October 17th, 1967.
