Comments/Directions:
The Downeast Scenic Railroad will begin 2011 operations on Memorial Day weekend. We will be offering a 1hr 30 min trip from Ellsworth Maine to Ellsworth Falls and then thru the Wye at Washington Junction and a return to downtown Ellsworth. Diesel engines will pull vintage passenger cars including an open air car and a caboose. We will operate on weekends and Holidays thru Columbus Day weekend. Check our web site for updated details.
At the core of the Downeast Scenic Railroad Project is the rehabilitation of the Washington Junction/Ellsworth to Green Lake section of the Calais Branch Line to create a 24-mile round- trip excursion ride. This stretch of the Calais Branch Line provides exceptional views of wetland marshes, glacial erratica including massive boulders, river and stream crossings, Little Rocky Pond and Green Lake. While working on this stretch of the line we have observed many forms of wildlife including osprey, Blue herons, Bald Eagles, moose, deer, snapping turtles, beavers...and bears, just west of Green Lake Road!
Other project components include construction of a depot/museum in Ellsworth and storage/repair facility at Washington Junction.

Comments/Directions:
We are proud to announce that after years of hard work rebuilding the railway, restoring our 1948 diesel engine, vintage passenger car and caboose, we will begin excursions in July 2010.
The Downeast Scenic Railroad will offer two trips per day on Saturdays and Sundays through the season. Our round-trip tour travels from Ellsworth, Maine, on the historic Calais Branch Line to Ellsworth Falls and then to Washington Junction and back to Ellsworth. The ten-mile trip takes approximately one and one-quarter hours.
