Comments/Directions:
Union Pacific Museum in historic library provides an extensive corporate collection provided by UP and now occupies Council Bluffs’ former Carnegie Library, which the city vacated. Opened in 2003, it is operated by museum volunteers and provides an enjoyable educational experience of early and modern railroading. Informative displays, photos, and railroad equipment fills two floors with the gift shop/entrance in the sub-basement level. Admission is a free-will donation – and that’s well deserved. In one hall, a large, interactive display tells of building the line to Promontory Point, Utah - both from Omaha, NE and from Sacramento, CA, creating the first transcontinental route. Educational displays include the politics of the event, Abraham Lincoln’s involvement, displays of his passenger car, development of the towns along the route, working on the railroad, etc. Interactive displays include a simulated run in the Engineer’s seat while a movie of the track scenery rushes past the cab windows as if the Locomotive barrels down the track. A walk through one hall tells about railroad work, building track, the yard, dispatching trains, etc.

Stories from the past 100 years ooze from the tin ceilings, original wood floors, as well as Innkeepers Connie Freeman and Mark Woldruff. The Hotel also has a restaurant and full-service lounge. One hour from Railswest Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs, IA. Other Museums nearby featuring Birthplace of Big Band Leader Glenn Miller and Birthplace Schoolhouse of 4-H Movement. A former Rock Island wide vision caboose (17028) converted into a self-contained guest house and available as a bed and breakfast. Open all year I think? The caboose sits in the back yard of the Varner's beautifully restored depot which is their private residence. The property sits right across the road from the Mississippi river and what I believe is the old Soo line, now operated by the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern RR. A very tasty breakfast is prepared and stored in the refrigerator to be reheated so guests can eat at their leisure and in privacy in the caboose the next morning. The best part... leave the dirty dishes in the sink! The caboose has an ample closet, queen bed, twin beds in the cupola (with safety rails for children), shower and bathroom, microwave, cooktop, small refrigerator, sink, television/vcr with train videos.

Comments/Directions:
In 1903 when the CB&Q (Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) Railroad Depot was completed, it was a model of modern convenience linking Red Oak Iowa to more urban communities in worlds totally different from life here on the prairie. Rural communities were virtually inaccessible by any method of transportation until lifelines of railroads joined them to more metropolitan societies.
Re-dedicated 20 DEC 2003, on the 100th anniversary of the first dedication, The Restored Burlington Northern Depot now houses a WWII Memorial Museum, dedicated to all those who served in the Second World War, whether on the front lines (1,100 active duty service participants were from Montgomery County Iowa) or the home front.
During WWII, the citizens of Montgomery County Iowa lost more men per capita than any other county in the United States. Active service participants were assigned to Company F (Villisca – organized JUN 1861) and Company M (Red Oak – organized MAY 1879). During WWII, both units were part of the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th (“Red Bull”) Infantry Division.

PACIFIC SHORTLINE RR BRIDGE MONUMENT
SIOUX CITY, IOWA -USA
Location: Chris Larsen Park, SIOUX CITY, IA
Description:
RAILROAD RELATED SITE
|
Comments/Directions:
A monument commemorates the Pacific Short Line RR bridge (1896) across the Missouri River at Sioux City after demolition in 1981 with a placard stating: “The stone of this monument came from the piers of the previous bridge erected at this spot. The Pacific Short Line had been a speculative railroad venture by Sioux City businessmen who sought new markets to the west. The railroad company failed in 1893....”
Construction began in 1890, but it actually never was used by the PSLRR. Locally it was known as the “Combination Bridge” because it carried trains and streetcars down the center and horse-drawn carts and pedestrians on the outside. It consisted of two 470' rim-bearing, through Pratt swing spans and two 500' Pennsylvania through trusses; and was remodeled several times, rails removed in 1937 and ultimately carrying only autos and pedestrians. The bridge provided needed competition for the 1888 Chicago and North Western Railroad’s “Union Bridge” also demolished in 1981 and replaced by the Burlington Northern bridge.
