The Patterson-McInnis train locomotive 2-8-0 #3. Known locally as Three Spot, this iron horse often pulled 30 to 40 cars as it transported logs from area woodlands near Gulf Hammmock Florida to the Patterson-McInnis sawmill. Originally a wood burning engine and built around 1915, it was converted to steam during its service, which ended shortly after World War II. The locomotive was donated by the Paterson-McInnis lumber company in 1969 and is maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation. Watch out for the fenced, barbed wired display on the way-side all along the south-bound U.S. Hwy 19-98 in Levy County, on the west Gulf Coast of Florida. And if you?ve never encountered no see-ums, this is your opportunity.

    Comments/Directions:
Henry Morrison Flagler became a multi-millionaire in the late 1800's after he and his partner, John D. Rockefeller built the Standard Oil Company. As Flagler went on to develop the east coast of Florida, he needed a way to bring people down to his lavish Ponce De Leon Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida so he bought the Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax railroad in 1899. After converting the JStA&H to standard gauge, he renamed it the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler continued building his railroad south while adding new hotels in cities through which it passed. A key to his early success with the Florida East Coast Railway, was building a bridge across the St. Johns River in Jacksonville to eliminate the use of rail car ferrys in use at that time. The St. Johns River railway bridge opened in 1890 and was used continuously until being replaced by a new double track bridge in 1925.

  • Web Site PIGEON KEY FOUNDATION HOMEPAGE
    Comments/Directions:
The site was a major base camp of the Florida East Coast Railway during the construction of the famed Key West Extension. It was the work camp for the men constructing the largest span on the entire extension, the Seven Mile Bridge. The camp site is on Pigeon Key, which the bridge crossed about three miles west of the end of Marathon Key. The site is maintained and operated by the Pigeon Key Foundation and many of the original structures survive. Access to the site is via the Knight's Key Bridge section of the Seven Mile Bridge. One may either walk or buy a ticket from the Foundation to ride their rubber tired tram. However, it is a LONG walk. Nice site. It is definately worth visiting, simply because of it's association with the fabled Key West Extension of the FEC. The site and bridge are in relatively good condition and both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Henry Flagler's FEC Railway and the luxury hotels he built along the way, linked the entire east coast of Florida, establishing agriculture and tourism as Florida's leading industries and Palm Beach as a world-renowned winter resort. When it was completed in 1902, Whitehall, Flagler's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach, was hailed by the New York Herald as "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." Today, Whitehall is open to the public as the Flagler Museum and features guided tours, Flagler's private railcar, changing exhibits, and special programs.
