-Update Jan 2008, the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad has acquired two more steam locomotives. One is planned to be in operation in 2008 on the line, the other is scheduled for 2009. They have also acquired five scenic Dome Cars. Check their site for more information. The 2008 Season begins May 24 and continues through Oct 19th. Steam Engines leave Alamosa daily for the picturesque town of La Veta and cross the 9,242 foot La Veta Pass. For easier access from Interstate 25 weekends trains depart from La Veta and have an optional stop at the Great Sand Dunes National Park or continue roundtrip to Alamosa. For a shorter ride select a roundtrip ride to the mountain top destination of Fir. Daily excursions also available to Monte Vista or to Antonito to connect with the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. A beautiful ride any time of the year and especially in the fall colors. Check out the webcam showing trains and weather in Alamosa.

Comments/Directions:
On May 21, 2004 my dad steamed up his engine for his first run around his own railroad. On the 22nd we joined him for some fun. The engine is a 1904 Cagney that originally was built for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. That year they used miniature steam railroads to shuffle attendees around the large fair grounds. When my dad got it, it was in pretty rough shape. 7 short years later you can see the results. He hasn't come up with a name for his railroad yet so I will use this one until he does. You will also find an inordinate amount of pictures but since it is my website I guess I can get away with it.

The Union Pacific depot in Brighton has been moved across the tracks and now is a quaint restaurant. The interior has been tastefully preserved and decorated with many railroad artifacts and pictures. Sara Talbert, Donna & and Tracy Thede and Brian Wiffin are the new owners and gracious hosts and enjoy telling of the property's history and railroading in general. A G guage railroad is suspended from the ceiling and runs through out the restaurant. In addition, if you are sitting in the atrium you can watch trains go by. The original boxcar attached to the building has been converted to a small dining area and bar. the entire building was renovated in 2007 during which time the old carpeting and linoleum floors were removed to reveal the original hardwood floors in the north dining room and the freight room floors in the south dining room. In addition, the north dining room was brought back to it's original splendor with wainscot walls and ceiling.

The Broomfield Historical Depot Museum is housed in a beautiful old train depot station which was transported from its original site at 120th and Wadsworth to its present location by Broomfield Jaycees in 1976. It is surrounded by the Zang Spur Park, so named after the railroad's original name for Broomfield.

The Phantom Canyon Brewing Company opened in December 1993, after almost three years in the planning. Phantom Canyon is located in the historic Cheyenne Building, which was built in 1901. Originally the local offices of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the building was renovated in 1909 and re-opened as The Cheyenne Hotel (owned and operated by the Shafer family until 1963).
The Cheyenne Building was the first downtown restaurant to be placed on the National Register of Historical Places and is located on the first corner of the city. All addresses and street plans originate from the intersection of Pikes Peak and Cascade. The building is named after Cheyenne Mountain and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne Indian Tribe (whose stone visage looks over the front entrance). Stop by and see this grand old building, take a sip of what's brewing. You will be glad you did.

Comments/Directions:
Denver Union Station & the surrounding area is undergoing a large scale renovation to become the transit hub of the Denver region. Until the project is completed, Amtrak is moving it's station to a building north of the historic station. The building exterior will not be changing but the interior is going to be reworked to support it's new role in the multi-modal transit hub known as Denver Union Terminal.
The model railroads in the basement are expected to remain accessible during most phases of the project.

The Platte Valley & Western Model Railroad Club (PV&WMRC) located in the basement of Denver's Union Station at 17th Street & Wynkoop in the LoDo section of downtown Denver. Open house dates are posted on the club?s website (www.PVWRR.org). Special Holiday Themed Open Houses are scheduled to coincide with the Holiday Lighting of the Historic Union Station. The club is also be open for public visits every Friday from 7pm to 9pm. Various other activities are scheduled for non-open house Fridays. Check the club's website for a full schedule of dates and activities.
A room that was used in the 1900s as the historic station's jail has been remodeled to house two HO gauge railroads depicting Rocky Mountain railroading in the 1950s. The Platte Valley & Western Railroad?s Rocky Mountain Division (Route of the Flying Buffalo) spans more than 1000 feet of mainline track traveling thru eight communities in the Rocky Mountains from the City of Platte to Ogden, Utah. The Clear Creek & San Juan HOn3 Narrow Gauge Railroad serves three Rocky Mountain communities and illustrates the differences between standard gauge and narrow gauge railroading.
The club maintains a relaxed atmosphere, and new members are always welcome. The members of the PV&WMRC are always happy to answer questions, demonstrate techniques and provide guidance to beginners in the hobby. In addition to building, maintaining and operating the railroads, the Club also actively participates in the twice yearly Great Train Expo and other railroading related activities.
For more information on the Platte Valley & Western Model Railroad Club, please see the club's web site (www.PVWRR.org).

Comments/Directions:
Formerly the Sushi Boat. Boats that used to float tantalizing dishes of sushi by guests at the sushi bar has been replaced by rail! A G-scale D&RGW K-27 pulls a "unit train" of sushi on D&RW flat cars which is helped by a large scale D&RG SD-45. Guests can pull small plates of sushi off the train or order from the menu, or both. As far as sushi goes, the chef has many variations on standard sushi and they are quite tasty! The train just adds the "wasabi on the tuna roll" to give this fun restaurant and extra kick!

Rail fans will delight in the Uintah Railway exhibit and the recreated train depot. The reconstructed Whiskey Creek Trestle is part of a display of cars, an engine and caboose. From 1904-1939, the Uintah ran from Mack, Colorado to Dragon, Utah. It hauled one of the world’s few commercial sources of gilsonite, a black, lustrous asphalt. Members of the Grand Valley Model Railroaders have displays of HO scale trains representing historic rail lines that ran through Western Colorado. Rave reviews from all over the world are flooding in as the Greeley Freight Station Museum enjoys its second (as of 2012) anniversary of existence located hard by the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad in Greeley, Colorado.
This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 railroad-related artifacts ranging from a Virginia and Truckee Railroad switch key to a full-sized Colorado and Southern wooden Caboose available for examining both inside and out.
Designed to appeal to visitors of all ages and nationalities, the GFSM has set record attendance marks in its first two years of operation and has become the leading year-round tourist attraction in Weld County, Colorado. The highlight of the museum is its huge, 5,500 sq. ft. operating miniature railroad dubbed "the finest model railroad I’ve ever seen", by the 30-year senior editor of Model Railroader magazine, Jim Hediger, Milwaukee, WI.
Visitors may actually stroll through this three dimensional creation while the railroad is in operation. They are surrounded by rugged mountains with handmade features including 16,000 fir, 8,000 deciduous and 4,000 aspen trees. Rivers abound. Scenery becomes three dimensional art. The use of cameras is encouraged and guides are available to answer railroad-related questions and to point out unique aspects of this one-of-a-kind modeling wonder. Take a visual tour through this amazing railroad in miniature via the GFSM website, then plan of visiting the museum in person the next time you visit Colorado.

Comments/Directions:
That station belonged the Denver, Utah & Pacific Railroad. This line was Moffat's first attempt to build a line due west out of Denver. It has kind of an odd history as the "Branch Line" from Denver to Lyons was built first and the main line from Hallack Jct (about 100th and Wadsworth Blvd) to Salt Lake City via (get this) Rollins Pass, Granby, and Rangely, Colo. The line was surveyed but never built. Their proposed main line missed Grand Junction completely. The DU&P was purchased by the CB&Q and Standard gauged using he old roadbed of the UP subsidiary the Denver, Western & Pacific Railroad from Burns Junction (just west of Broomfied) via Lafayette, Erie and Idaho Creek into Longmont. This depot was also used for many years by the CB&Q as a freight office which is why it survived so long. I remember rattling by it when I was about 18 when a friend of mine (who was a CB&Q engineer) took me for a ride on the "Buckwheat Branch", which is what the branch to Lyons was known as. The depot was still being used by the CB&Q then for MOW.
(above was contributed by Rick S. Thanks for the info Rick!)
The depotis used as The Oriental Express Asian Seafood Market. Their number is above.

Comments/Directions:
Palmer Lake is where the D&RG and the Santa Fe used to squeeze through the narrow valley on their way to Denver from Colorado Springs via 2 separate lines. Later this became one of the most infamous segments of shared trackage after court ordered rail sharing. The former Santa Fe line south of here into the Springs has been converted into a bike/hiking trail. North the 2 lines still are separate. Here they combine for the rest of the trip into the Springs and provide for some great train watching.

Ridgway, Colorado, long known as the birthplace of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, is the home of a museum dedicated to the preservation of the history of railroading in Ouray County and surrounding areas. The Ridgway Railroad Museum is a non-profit, member supported organization whose mission is to explain and interpret the role and significance of railroads in the history of this region by use of exhibits, a reference library, educational programs, publications and sharing information with historical and modeling groups. The Museum preserves railroad equipment, artifacts, historical data, books, and photographs of Ouray County and the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. We currently have on display on our 600 feet of Narrow gauge trackage an operational replica of RGS Motor No. 1, as well as the following restored D&RGW equipment: caboose 0575, drop bottom gondola No. 702, Stock car 5574, box car 3130 and water service car 04914. Comments/Directions:
In the 1880's, the Denver and Rio Grande Railway was building at a torrid pace throughout Colorado. One of the most beautiful areas was on the headwaters of the Rio Grande River at a mountain pass known as Wagon Wheel Gap. Hot springs in this area, as well as the cool summers at its 8,500 foot elevation, made it a perfect resort area for the friends and guests of General William Jackson Palmer, then President of the D&RGRR. A rail line was extended to this spot from the end of the line in Del Norte. With mining demands high, the line was extended to the mountain mining town of Creede a few years later. This line was active through 1985 when the last few cars of ore were carried out. The line that carried hundreds of thousands of passengers and millions of dollars worth of silver ore fell quiet. Until the spring of 2000 when the Denver & Rio Grande Historical Foundation purchased this 21.6 mile line of scenic mountain meadows, rivers and 1,000 foot cliffs. This area is well known for its scenic vistas, historic towns and mines, fishing, hunting and just a wonderful get-away-from-it-all place. Reservations to ride on this historic line during the 2009 season may be placed through the Denver & Rio Grande Railway Historical Foundation at the number listed above!

TRINIDAD C & S DEPOT
516 ELM ST.
TRINIDAD, COLORADO -USA
Location: TRINIDAD, CO
Description:
RAILROAD DEPOT
RAILROAD RELATED CAFE/RESTAURANT
|
Comments/Directions:
Former C&S depot (later BNSF) is beautifully restored. It is privately-owned since the 1960's when John Elway was involved with the prospect of developing it; and it has been occupied by a series of taverns, etc. Be sure to look at nice view of the building using the "Street View" feature on the google map. Downtown Trinidad has innumerable Southwest Style architectural style buildings.

Comments/Directions:
The Florence & Cripple Creek railroad was the first railroad to reach the rich gold fields of Victor and Cripple Creek. It was a narrow gauge line that ran down Phantom Canyon to Florence near Canon City. Alta Vista was the last town on the line before arriving in Victor. The depot has since been moved to Victor. Thanks to the Victor Trading Co. for providing a history of the station.
