    Comments/Directions:
The Railway's "corporate" name is almost longer than the right of way. Like many early day railroads the name gives rise to expectations far greater than its ability to provide service. Though it will never reach Descanso, let alone the Pacific, it does serve six stations on our 2.5 acres here in Alpine. Though we would like to think of it as a tourist line it is probaly most aptly described as a "backyard" raialroad. It is typical of many industrial and mining operations. It is full size and not a scale model. Construction was started in the fall of 1989 and passenger service was inaugurated May, 1990. We currently operqate over about 1/4 mile of track so you travel about 1/2 mile from the time you leave the depot at Shade until you return. Passing over a 112 foot long trestle at High Pass you get a sweeping view of Alpine and on a clear day you can see almost 100 miles to the north where Mt. San Jacinto towers over Palm Springs, CA. You will visit our engine house and my grandfather's black smith shop. At New Marnell our duel gauge track is in operation for the interchange with an 18 inch mining railroad, home of our 1.5 ton electric mine motor, a Mancha "Little Trammer". Further on at El Pozo, any southwest railroad worth it's salt has at least one station with a Spanish name, we will demonstrate the magic of switch lamps that show red and green but are equipped with red and blue lenses. We operate on Sunday, weather permitting, from 1 to 3 PM on a first come, first served basis. Rides are free. Come and take a step back in time on Alpine's only operatig 2 foot gauge railroad.

Six miles of rail have been replaced on the historic right-of-way first used by the Central Pacific in the 1860's. (The line was abandoned by Southern Pacific in the mid 1980's.) Round trip takes approximately 1 hour (plus).Plans (someday) are to extend into the town of Niles, and eastward to the town of Pleasanton. Railroad is staffed entirely by volunteers -- always can use more help! Check website for current schedules.

Large G scale replica of the Union Pacific Railroad from Gerber to Dunsmuir. Godfrey Humann, creator of the South Shasta Lines, opens his museum seasonally. His trains first ran for the public in 1950. Since then, nearly 89,000 people have attended, coming from all parts of the world. Humann's miniature trains, includuing 17 steam locomotives, will be running over 900 feet of tracks, along with 100 freight and passenger cars. The trains travel through scenic replicas of the Sacramento River Canyon and work their way up the grades in view of pine and fir trees that cling to the cliffs. Trains travel through tunnels, cross bridges and a water fall. Hundreds of tiny details are part of South Shasta lines, such as glowing fireboxes in the steam locomotive, a bell that rings, an operating sawmill and a copy of an alfalfa mill that was a Gerber landmark. Music plays from the church and nine of the locomotives are equipped with sound. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Each showing can accommodate 75 people.

This is the actual Goleta Depot (built in 1901 and moved to current site in County Park) and is somewhat more than just a "museum" It's a site worth going out of the way to visit. It has a real caboose that can be entered; a restored Freight Office; a small store selling books, magazines and railroad memorabilia. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby is historic Stowhouse and Sexton museum. The RR depot and grounds are free. Bring a picnic. See website for schedule of miniature-train rides, handcar rides, and much more. • RAILROAD DEPOT
  • Comments/Directions:
In 1883 the Carson and Colorado Railroad was built from Belleville, Nevada, across the White Mountains to Benton and down into the Owens Valley where the rail line ended in Keeler. The engine was nicknamed "The Slim Princess". The arrival of the rail line and stagecoach in Keller was a great event. Passengers came in on the evening train twice a week to take the stage on the following day to Mojave. Passengers spent the layover at the Lake View Hotel, later the name changed to the Hotel Keeler. To the north the short line connected with the Virginia & Truckee Line at Mound House, Nevada. A portion of Keeler's railroad history is still visible in the old railroad station, stationmaster's house, and remnants of passenger coaches that are now converted into residences. North of Lone Pine is the Lone Pine Station Road, which goes east to the abandoned Southern Pacific depot (now a private residence). With the building of the LA aqueduct, large quantities of freight were needed in the Owens Valley, and the railroad was extended from Mojave to Lone Pine for this purpose.

We are one of Napa's most unique and best restaurants. Located in the nation’s most prominent culinary capital, the Napa Valley Wine Train is a standout restaurant of utmost quality. Our talented chef is creative, and dedicated to fresh, wholesome ingredients. Choose from an excellent seasonal menu, and then enjoy the dish that was prepared to your specifications in one of our 3 specially designed kitchen cars. Or enjoy the train ride a la carte in the open air, western-themed Silverado car. Many fun events and opportunities are available on the train: from small lunches where you can meet local vintners, to murder mysteries and other dinner theater. Also, available are great winery tours. Our vintage rail cars are almost completely gone from the American landscape, and now only exist in museums or organizations such as ours. These cars were once dominant features of life in the United States and a standard-setter for luxury and customer service. The Napa Valley Wine Train harkens back to the era of fresh food and attentive service. We are the Iron Horse.

Located in Nevada City, California, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum is dedicated to the preservation of local transportation history and artifacts from the narrow gauge railroad era. In addition to the railroad, this Sierra foothills county boasted such turn-of-the 20th century transportation as an electric streetcar line, a steam powered automobile, and the first commercial airport in the United States. Visitors are offered a docent-led historical tour of the museum, railyard, and restoration shop. Exhibited in the main gallery is Engine 5, an 1875 Baldwin that began service hauling lumber, then passengers and freight for the NCNGRR, and finally as a movie engine at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The railyard houses a collection of wooden rail cars, some restored, others awaiting their turn in the restoration shop. The shop is usually a busy place with volunteers doing rolling stock maintenance and other restoration projects. The museum's Gift Shop offers visitors a choice of many railroad-related items.

The San Bernardino depot built in 1918 by the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe rr (now BNSF) is a magnificent example of classic Spanish Mission Revival architecture, with red clay tile roof and wide broad-eaved gable roof lines, white stucco exterior, mission parapets and arched window/door openings,. It incorporates features of Moorish Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles that add magnificence and complexity. The depot's massive 2-1/2 story centerpiece sports four corner towers topped with domes (Moorish Revival) which are signatory for this the largest depot west of the Mississippi when built. Also incorporated are numerous mission-style facades and parapets such as the parapets with corner mini domes facing both front and trackside at the west end of the 400-foot long structure. Having replaced the 1886 two-and-a-half-story wooden structure that burned in 1916, it is one of the oldest train stations in California and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (in 2001). Completion of Historic Route 66 in 1920, which passed nearby, began a decline of passenger service and disrepair. The San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) purchased the station from Santa Fe rr in 1992 and began extensive restoration in 2004. The San Bernardino History and Railroad Museum is housed here. The California Southern rr completed the rail line through San Bernardino, connecting San Diego to Barstow in 1885; and it became the terminus of ATSF rr's connection to Chicago and remains one of the busiest freight and passenger routes. Of note is the TRAIN SPOTTING opportunity trackside with the adjacent BNSF intermodal container freight yard and Amtrak "Southwest Chief" thru service from LA to Chicago. Located immediately west at the depot is the eastern terminus of LA metrolink service.

  • Comments/Directions:
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN -- The California Southern Railroad's magnificent Victorian depot, built in 1887, was demolished in 1915. Located at Broadway and Pacific Highway across the tracks to the east of it's replacement Santa Fe Depot (see CA attraction 140), which was built in Spanish Revival architectural style with it's elaborate twin domes in time for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park. The California Southern Railroad, a subsidiary of the AT&SF (BNSF), incorporated in 1880 and began construction near San Diego of their rail connection through San Bernardino, Barstow and Needles. Completed by 1885, it formed the western terminus of Santa Fe's transcontinental route to Chicago. AT&SF absorbed CaSo in 1906 when its holdings were puchased outright.

The San Leandro Historical Railway Society (SLHRS) is housed in the San Leandro depot which was built in 1898 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Construction of an HO scale model railroad display began in 1991. As with most model railroad displays, there is always more work to do. Per the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) Kalmbach Memorial Library, the SLHRS has the largest HO scale helix in the United States both in height and in diameter. There is over 4,000 feet of track on 3 levels, dozens of switches, and miles of wiring that have been installed by society members. It takes about 45 minutes for a train to travel the entire length of the display at scale speed. Most locomotives and rolling stock are membership owned and cared for. The maintenance of the museum and construction of the model railroad display are performed by members of the society. Financial support is through membership dues and donations from visitors and railroad enthusiasts. The SLHRS receives no public funds. The SLHRS has programs for many age levels; novice (ages 6 thru 13), student (ages 14 thru 18), and general membership. Our novice program requires parental or adult supervision. We also welcome contributing sponsors for those who want to support our organization, but are unable to participate on a regular basis. The Society holds general meetings on the first Friday of each month (except for major holidays) at 7:30 PM in the depot.

The Southern Pacific depot in Sanger is home to the town's local history museum. Sanger was founded as a "lumber town" and had a 54-mile flume that started in Sequoia and terminated in Sanger. The museum has a very nice collection of lumber era memorabilia including a miniature model of historic Sanger and a full size replica (outside) of a section of the lumber flume. The Depot is also home to an impressive Native American basket collection.

Santa Barbara's Southern Pacific Depot was constructed in 1902 in Spanish Mission Revival style architecture, including red clay roof tiles, wide overhanging eaves and gable ends, smooth stucco walls and round arches on piers. Formed by the arches, arcades virtually encircle the entire structure, reflecting the relatively mild conditions of the region, wherein passengers await their train outdoors. Facing trackside is a mission-style facade, while the streetside is rather plain and unremarkable, and the lobby is relatively tiny. Major renovation in 2000 restored the seating area and the ticket office to its original grandeur and the free-standing Railway Express Agency building was redone. Placed on the National Historic Register in 2006. SP Business Car No. 142 sits on a relict SP spur nearby on the grounds. Santa Barbara's Moreton Bay Fig Tree is documented as the largest Ficus macrophylla in the entire U.S. Two Amtrak lines are served: Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner. The Southern Pacific Branch Railway began in 1886 and the first train arrived in Santa Barbara from Los Angeles Aug. 18, 1887, with Engine No. 226 (a 4-4-0 locomotive) pulling six coaches, two sleepers ("San Diego" and "California") and a baggage car. Two Amtrak lines are served: the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Seattle and the Pacific Surfliner between ? to San Luis Obispo. It is within walking distance of Santa Barbara Harbor, the beaches and Stearns Wharf, and the downtown along State Street - Santa Barbara's main thoroughfare

  • Comments/Directions:
The narrow gauge San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad ran from Brack’s Landing west of Lodi and reached Valley Springs on April 25, 1885. The line was soon purchased by the Southern Pacific, went standard gauge in 1904 and, while regular passenger service ended in 1932, freight was still being hauled into 1983. While no trains or tracks remain, the 124-year-old Valley Springs depot is the only original station of the SJ&SNRR still standing. The building was rededicated at Valley Springs Train Time Celebration in 2008
