Currently operates a "doodlebug" gas powered coach, a small gas locomotive, a diesel locomotive, and a steam crane. Also restoring to operation a 0-4-0 Baldwin steam switch engine. The latest addition to the railroad is a 35 ton Plymouth gas locomotive. Also at the site are replica railroad buildings, an engine house, a depot, a section house, an old time filling station, an old time general store and an old school from the site of the former rail stop of Viele several miles east of the site and formerly part of the railroad that has been restored. Operates one mile of a line that used to run west from Ft Madison and Viele to Bloomfield, IA and southwestly to Carrolton Mo. It had been hoped at one time in history to make this a route from Chicago to Kansas City, but that never materialized and the line was abandoned in the late 60's. I received this:"This museum has been closed due to the owner's illness. The museum will be auctioned off in June 2008. Thank you to everyone who supported this attraction. Thanks for the memories!"

The Hardin Southern Railroad has operated a seasonal Nostalgia Train passenger service on weekends over its route through the scenic Clarks River Valley since 1994. The passenger train operates from Memorial Day through the end of October. Additional equipment is being sought and acquired for operation and for display, including Baldwin 2-6-2 steam locomotive #4, which is very slowly being rebuilt for eventual service. The railroad owns and operates the portion of the former Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway's Paducah main line between Murray and Hardin, Kentucky. Service ended in 2004.

Below is from MaineBiz
"After two years of disappointing ridership and lack of member support, the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad and Preservation Society is ceasing operations, and is selling its assets and equipment, according to VillageSoup.com.
The 140-year-old Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad carried freight through central Maine up to the decline of the freight business in the 1980s, when it became a tourism attraction. The nonprofit Preservation Society was formed in 2005 to run the railroad as a tourist excursion and operate a train museum. But Robert Lamontagne, president of the Belfast Railroad Preservation Society, said the organization did not have enough financial support in grants and membership fees to break even. The railroad has a large overhead due to the expensive equipment and rail operations.
The Maine Department of Transportation, which has a contract with the railroad to offer tourist excursions along a 30-mile stretch of track between Burnham and the Waldo town line, told VillageSoup.com that it would offer up the contract to a new operator if one could be found."
Previous attraction info:
The Belfast and Moosehead Lake RR in Maine actually has two operations, a Budd RDC excursion from Belfast ME and steam or diesel excursion from Unity, ME.

The Ohio Central stopped running its seasonal tourist train out of Sugarcreek, Ohio several years ago. In the interval (up until 7/2006), the OC would run a number of steam excursions and continued to acquire steam locomotives for restoration. This year's (2006) NRHS convention was held near the OC's headquarters. There were several trips behind OC diesels and only one with steam. The OC may be leaving the passenger business altogether. The OC shops at Morgan Run, Ohio continue to repair and up-grade first and second generation diesels for in system use as well as resale.

STEAM EXCURSIONS STANDARD GAUGE

Comments/Directions:
The SamTrak excursion train has ceased operating as of a few years ago. Two pieces of equipment, a GE 25-ton switcher and a flatcar, have been donated to the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society museum in Brooks, Oregon. The 45-ton switcher and the logging caboose remain in Milwaukie, not in use.
The railroad is paralleled by a paved bike/walking trail from OMSI to Oaks Park, along the shores of the Willamette River.
Occassionally, excursions have been offered on the former SamTrak route using either the Southern Pacific #4449 and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle #700 (both mainline 4-8-4 steam locomotives); check with their respective groups, the Northwest Rail Museum, or the Pacific Northwest Chapter NRHS, for more information.

The Laurel Highlands Railroad is now defunct. It was a nice little road while it lasted. The engine (#7)was of local origin, being a former yard engine for the West Penn Railway in Connellsville. #7 had been moved to nearby Uniontown in hopes of starting another excursion railroad there, but the plans fell through and the engine was sold.

I can't find any info on this attraction, the name now seems to be used by a mansion converted to B&B so marked it as gone but not forgotten.
All Aboard! Take a trip in an elegant Pullman car lined with windows framing the Capitol. Snuggle into a pillow top queen bed with an antique brass headboard and dream of a bygone era with steam engines and the allure of sleeping cars. Red, gold and blue fabrics, stained glass and authentic Railroad memorabilia add to the irresistible charm.

Miniature steam railroad. (Tommy Thompson's home built steam locomotive and rolling stock were moved to inside private storage. Current disposition is on hold while his family attempts to carry out Tommy's wishes. Some of the Anacortes right-of-way was still in place the end of 2004, current status is unknown.) I received this notice recently, hooray for government:
"as of 1999, Tommy Thompson died, ending 25 years operating his Anacortes Railway. Tommy's Forney Style Locomotive was originally a Compressed Air Locomotive built by H. K. Porter Company, in 1909 for the Homestake Mine. Thompson then acquired it, and redesigned a firebox and cab for it, which he built over in Seattle. Thompson also fabricated and built each one of his passenger cars, proving he was a craftsman of hardwoods. The Thompson Family ran their locomotive on large chunks of fir bark, which gave off the sweetest smelling exhaust anyone had the pleasure of smelling. The family sold the locomotive, and cars, and other odds and ends, leaving only the tracks in Anacortes. The equipment now sits in storage at Boeing Field, at the Georgetown Steam Plant Museum in South Seattle. Check the Washington State Steam Railroads and Locomotives Website, I'm sure they would be more than helpful to verify this information. Some information on the Railroad to know, is that from day one, Thompson fought with the City of Anacortes for nearly 10 years on getting approval on that corridor that he operate his railroad on. The city was dead set against it, as they saw it as nothing more than an amusement ride, which in their minds would die out after the first year. The railroad became more popular each year, having record breaking crowds every year. It got to the point, that the second Air Compressed Locomotive that Thompson had in reserve, was considered to be modified for a second locomotive for the railroad. But Tommy died, his dream of having 2 locomotives operating on his track never happened. So now the Thompson Family has sold off all the Railroad, Locomotives, Cars, rails, Frogs, Switches, to spite Anacortes, for all those years that Tommy had to fight with them to operate his railroad, he gave instructions in his Will, that the family was never to donate, sell, lease to the City, his railroad and it's equipment, at any cost. So, when it was sold, the buyers were under a legal contract to never sell, donate, or lease any of their newly bought equipment to the City of Anacortes, or sale of equipment would be terminated and go back to the Thompson Family as their said property again and would be subject for commercial scrap out. The Thompson Family was angry with the City of Anacortes, as their railroad always brought in more money and tourism than anything else in that town. But if it ever were to run again, it won't be in Anacortes, that's for sure."

-----------Camp 6 Historic Logging Museum Is Closed
The owners of Camp 6 have been unable to find a buyer or investor to keep the historic
logging museum open in Point Defiance Park, Tacoma. Consequently, Camp 6 is now
permanently closed. The historic logging museum had operated for 47 years, but now
remains closed following its usual winter break.
“We are heartbroken about this decision, but there is no way to keep Camp 6 operating
at Point Defiance Park,” said Alan Macpherson, spokesperson for the Western Forest
Industries Museum, which owns Camp 6. “Camp 6 only operates on admissions fees,
donations and grants. We’ve had fewer visitors each year, and no longer have the funds
to continue operating.”
In addition, Macpherson said, the trains, logging equipment and buildings at Camp 6 are
deteriorating and there are no funds to repair them.
No potential buyer who could operate Camp 6 has come forward. WFIM now is working
to find a buyer or buyers for the pieces in the collection, including engines, open cars,
bunkhouses, bunk cars and other pieces of equipment.
“Our preference is to find a buyer who will keep most of the collection together and
display it for the public,” Macpherson said. “That buyer might not exist in Washington
State. We’d be willing to sell the collection outside Washington if we could keep most of
the collection together and on display.”
Any unsold pieces would likely be added to WFIM’s Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad in
Mineral, Washington.
WFIM leases property in Point Defiance Park from Metro Parks for a nominal amount.
WFIM established the Camp 6 Logging Museum in 1964 as a living, hands-on
demonstration of Washington State’s logging and railroad history from the 1880s
through the 1940s. Attendance and the condition of the collection have been in decline
recently. Ridership of the historic trains at Camp 6 dropped 40 percent last year, from
5,982 in 2009 to just 3,600 in 2010. ---------
Steam era Logging museum with diesel & gas loco powered excursions. Home to 8 steam donkeys from 1887 Dolbeer to 240 ton Lidgerwood tower skidder. Over two dozen items of RR equipment from 90 ton Pacific Coast Shay to Polson Co. bunk houses on ex 1870's NP flat cars. RR operates April thru September on Weekends. Santa Train first three weekends in December. Museum's 14 acre site open year round during daylight hours. No admission fee to grounds, RR rides have fares. Camp 6, A National Registered Historical Place, opened in 1964 and is operated by Tacoma Chapter, National Railway Historical Society. Tacoma is also home to BNSF, UP, AMTRAK, Tacoma Rail, Sound Transit SOUNDER trains and LINK light-rail. LINK runs daily and is free, a true "cat-wire" electric trolly in the 21st. century. Tacoma has been TRAINing since the 1870's. With miles and miles of Rail-fan opertunities all over town plan on spending the day.

Comments/Directions:
The WVN provides a scenic, relaxing, and educational 10.7 mile (21 mile round-trip) from Kingwood, WV to Tunnelton, WV. At Tunnelton a connection remains with the CSX on the ex-B&O's famous West End Division, with frequent CSX traffic. A coal-hauling railroad dating back to the 1880's, the line consists of steep grades and tight curves. A double switch-back and the third steepest grade in the state (4.77%) highlight the journey. Equipment is a mixture of refurbished Long Island commuter cars and Erie Lackawanna MU electric cars. Motive power for the journey is a very rare EMD SW-1200 equipped with dynamic brakes. This engine was bought new by the WVN, with the dynamic brake feature being almost a necessity. Trains depart the Kingwood Junction yard office every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday at 11 am and 3 PM. Special trains are run for fall foliage and charters are available. Call for further details and a full color brochure.
